There will be no import of cars (high-end premium) and bikes as well as spares by Japanese auto companies in India from the parent companies.
The earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan yesterday (March 11, 2011) has been the most destructive in the last 100 years in Japan, had forced several companies in Japan to pull down the factory shutters and cease their operations.
Suzuki Motor Corp holds about 55% stake in India’s auto major Maruti Suzuki and the Indian automobile company imports spares including engines and gears from the parent company for its brands.
Mr. Shashank Srivastava, the Chief General Manager of Maruti Suzuki India told media that the company is studying the impact on vendors of Suzuki Motor Corp.
The no import of spares will certainly hamper production of some car brands such as Honda Accord to name but one and many companies will face the supply shortage problems. Besides there will be no import of premium bikes such as Suzuki Hayabusa from the Suzuki and high-end Yamaha bikes from the Yamaha for sometime. Bike and car enthusiasts who must have booked for high end cars (Nissan makes) and bikes may have to wait for don’t know how long.
