Chevrolet Beat Diesel, now will this be the game-changer for General Motors? It was during launch of 'Smartech' engine, that the General Motors India management made few exciting announcements- one was about launch of Chevrolet Beat diesel.
To date Beat happens to be the cheapest hatch in the premium segment and it is for this reason it can be speculated that Beat diesel could be another game changer. With petrol prices getting revisions every now and then, buyers are tilted to diesel fuelled autos and to have a diesel Beat will be a valuable addition to GM's portfolio.
The company announced that Beat diesel will come out in July 2011 (during the first week). The Chevy Beat will be the first car in its class to have a diesel version too and it could well give advantage to the company with many firsts- first 3-cylinder diesel engine, the first diesel engine under 1 liter.
The company sources say that Beat diesel produces the best 'torque per liter' and also best bhp per liter. It generates 58.5bhp power and 150NM (15.29kgm) of torque @1750rpm from its frugal 936cc CRDI engine and promises good performance.
Although the price is not revealed it is speculated that GM will peg it under Rs. 4 lakhs to make it the cheapest diesel hatch. Industry pundits feel that it will be pegged Rs. 75,000 greater than the 1.2l Beat petrol version.
Can it better the Tata India eVz in terms of price and mileage?
Beat will then be available in 3 options; Petrol, LPG and the diesel. Time will tell how the US automaker Chevrolet's diesel hatch performs in the market.
