Volkswagen Up! to rock Indian small car segment

Volkswagen, one of the world’s famous car manufactures, is planning to launch a small car in India. But this time they are mainly targeting on the entry level car segment. After the successful launch of Volkswagen Polo in the India, they are confident enough about their new launch. According to the media the Indian auto motive sector is gaining strength day by day. The Indian car industry is very famous for its small hatch back segment. In order to meet the customer demands the car manufacturers are launching new models in India. This might have triggered Volkswagen group to launch the new model Volkswagen Up!.

Volkswagen first revealed their small car concept at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show in the name of Volkswagen Up!. In 1998 they first launched the small hatch back model called Volkswagen Lupo in Germany and replaced that model in 2005 by Volkswagen Fox. The Volkswagen Lupo received the “International Engine of the Year Award – Best Fuel Economy” in 1999. The Lupo had a 999cc 4 Cylinder, 5 speed multi point injection petrol engine with 50 hp @ 5000 rpm and Torque of 87 nm @ 3000 rpm. It had a top speed of 152 kph and had a mileage of 17.85 kmpl combined.

The Volkswagen India is going to launch Volkswagen Up! in India in 2012. The car is a 2-door hatch back and is expected to have a 1.0-litre 3 cylinder petrol engine producing 74 hp and a 1.2- litre diesel engine with 84hp. The Volkswagen Up! is a city car for four persons.

Up! offers more space than any other car of similar length of 3.45 meters long, 1.63 meters wide and 1.50 meters high. Though the Volkswagen India has other options and plans regarding the engine and car models, it’s likely to hear VW has plans to launch two other variants and models of Volkswagen Up! in India. The quality of the car will not be an issue as it is from the Volkswagen Group. The car is said to have a fuel efficiency of about 20 kmpl and expected to have a price tag around Rs 3,50,000 for the base model in India.

VW Up! has two seat rows and they can be removed and folded. That makes extra storage room for luggage. The second seat row is bench type for making enough room for two passengers and high seating position allows comfortable seating. The features like audio, blue tooth, AC control etc will be in a touch screen mode. The car is said to have 18 inch long wheels and wider tyres along with higher wheel base with front disc and rear drum brakes for more handling and riding comforts in Indian road conditions. The car will be equipped with safety and other features as in other cars in the 1.0-litre car segment.

The Volkswagen Up! is expecting tough competitions from Hyundai i10, Hyundai Santro, Chevrolet Spark, Maruti Estilo, Maruti A-Star, Maruti Wagon R, Maruti Alto K10, Tata Nano in India.
