Indian subsidiary of Volvo Cars Corp said that it may consider launching cheaper variants in the subcontinent. The company admitted that there is a growing demand for luxury cars in India and so it may consider coming with stripped-down versions of one or two of its models so that the sales is boosted.
Tomas Emberg, the newly appointed MD of Volvo Auto India told in a press meet today that the company may consider launching of low cost versions of its models. The Managing Director didn't clarify about the models though, but auto circles believe it could be the S60 and S80 sedans.
What the company gains from stripping down is to help the Volvo trim down on the price while competing with rivals including BMW, Daimler and Audi. Earlier BMW has introduced low cost variant of 3-series to boost sales and attract customers.
It should be remembered that Volvo is currently not assembling its cars in India, and the models come with heavy price tag due to high taxes on the imported cars. Volvo Auto India currently sells S60 and S80 sedans and XC60 and XC90 SUVs in India.
