Mercedes Benz is mulling with the idea of launching compact cars in India by 2012.Thriving economy fuelled by increasing hunger for premium hatches tempts german car maker Mercedes Benz to consider coming up with compact cars in the Indian auto scene.
The bloating demand for hatches in India as well as the possible profitability of the segment makes the German luxury car maker Mercedes Benz to mull with investing in the making of premium small car/s made for the Indian customers.
Daimler, world’s luxury car major and the parent company of German auto giant Mercedes Benz, has announced its plans of setting up manufacturing facility in Chakan, Maharashtra to develop premium small cars.
The company has earmarked metros including N. Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai as its brand centers.
The bulging small car market has seen a huge roll of cars (1,369,174) on the Indian roads during Apr-Dec 2010 which is a 30% higher as compared to same time period of 2009.
It is in the recent years several international car makers have launched their premium small cars; Ford Figo, VW Polo, Toyota Liva, to mention but few. BMW too plans for its small car launch BMW Mini for Indian markets soon. The cost of the small cars though aren’t small and in the range of 5 to 8 lakh rupees and you can only expect where Mercedes will want to price its small car.
The German car maker Mercedes has giant plans and the company completes 125 years of its global presence, with diverse patterns and wheelbases to even support green technologies.
The MD and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, Peter Honegg said that their Chakan plant near Pune Maharashtra is currently not facilitated enough to make the compact cars. It makes the C, S and E class Mercs at the plant.
