Czech car manufacturer Skoda has started production of its yet-to-be-launched new compact sedan Rapid. The production commenced at the company’s Chakan facility and the company aims to export the Skoda Rapid to global markets from its Indian facility.
The company also confirmed that although the Skoda Rapid is a made-for-India sedan it will be launched globally on November 16, 2011 from New Delhi, India.
Skoda Rapid will be built on the same platform as the Skoda’s hatch Fabia and will come powered by a 1.6-liter petrol and diesel engines. The sedan will be a competition to VW Vento, Honda City, Fiat Linea, and Ford Fiesta.
Skoda Rapid will come in three trims and the company will offer AT for the high end trim both petrol and diesel variants. It is noteworthy that Volkswagen Vento doesn’t come with an AT for the diesel version.
Also according to anonymous sources from company, the company aims to position Rapid at a cost lower than the VW Vento, in the price bracket of 8-10 lakhs. A diesel sedan from Skoda in this price is going to draw lot of crowds from the corporates and is going to give it stiff to all the sedans powered by diesels under Rs. 10 lakhs.
