Volkswagen Jetta 2.0L - Elite for those who want to have exquisite

The German carmaker Volkswagen unravelled the new Jetta, which in no way has any traces of its predecessor. The car is built on an all-new platform and flashes the Volkswagen's new design principle. The company claims that with the new Jetta along with the fleet of cars from Polo to Passat they have a wide range of cars to offer to the Indian consumer. Brand Jetta has been a success story globally and the sixth generation car is greatly expected to create waves in India too.

Looks (interiors and exteriors)

The VW Jetta is 90 mm longer than the old Jetta, which means passengers will have lot space to stretch out during long drives. The styling of the new Jetta is anything but truly adventurous, and it's not going to be offensive - that said, this won't be a bold car and a real head turner. The car gets soft-feel plastics in the dash and in the vents (for rear seat passengers) who will never complain of leg room wanting and the headroom is more than adequate.

Even the exterior dimensions of the Jetta are quite well proportioned that gave out solid exterior surfaces and even the creases exude awesome style besides elegance.

The alloy wheels, double exhaust pipes with day time lights, fog lights in the rear and the rear view mirrors with turn indicator lights are all expected of the Jetta. To sum it up, the front and rear of the Jetta look completely refurbished to offer a brand new car much to the delight of the customers.

The VW designer team has actually given 100% for the Jetta; the rear seats look very spacious to render the maximum comfort for the rear seat passengers, and now ask about the quality of the interiors? It is impeccable to say the least. The seats are upholstered in leather as is the steering wheel, gear knob and even the hand brake.

In the inside the Jetta boasts of touchscreen audio system (along with 6-CD changer) with Parktronic system and acoustic warning with a central display. New Jetta also comes with cruise control.

The comfort features in the VW Jetta include AC vents in the rear, arm rest with storage box, adjustable (12-way and electrical) driver seat, multifunction display are some to enthral the insiders.

Jetta's safety features will enthral you even more which include airbags (one more first in this segment is presence of 8 airbags), ESP (electronic stability programme), engine immobilizer, engine and the transmission guard, seat belt in the front that can be adjusted according to driver's height and which has a seatbelt pre-tensioner. The hill hold control feature is another good add-on safety feature. The legroom in the rear is very much adequate and headroom just ample as anyone would expect from the likes of the Jetta.

Engine, performance and mileage

The Jetta diesel variant is enabled with 2.0L, 4-cylinder, CRDi engine that delivers a maximum power of 140 Ps at 4200 rpm and torque of 320 Nm at 1750-2500 rpm and is also equipped with 6-speed gear box that are available in both automatic (DSG) and manual transmission. The highly powerful engine obviously offers the best of performance. The big tyres prevent the car from skidding while driving on wet surface and also helps you remain steady if you are going off the track at high speed. With umpteen safety features the Jetta is an easy vehicle to handle on any kind of driving and road conditions.

The Jetta gives an average mileage of around 12.5 kmpl in the city and 15.5 kmpl on the highway, which is outstanding to say the least in this segment. It doesn't mean underpowered still and overtaking with passengers (uphill) is no problem with a Volkswagen Jetta.

As for the drive quality the car feels fairly solid with a reasonably noise free drive, other than the road noise on the coarse Indian highway, but that side the rear view mirrors seem tad smaller.

The steering is light and unoffending, and both the turbodiesel and the petrol engines are appealing drivetrains, although I would say the diesel would be my favourite - it's noiseless, smooth and very linear. The diesel Jetta has more than enough torque and it is delivered without having to feel strained.

Colors, variants and price

You can choose the Jetta from the following color options: solid paint, candy white, metallic paint, heaven blue, red spice, reflex silver, platinum grey, pearl effect paint and deep black. The four variants with ex-showroom prices are listed below:

- Volkswagen Jetta 2.0L TDI Trendline - Rs 14,12,400
- Volkswagen Jetta 2.0L TDI Comfortline - Rs 15,39,400
- Volkswagen Jetta 2.0L TDI Highline - Rs 17,06,400
- Volkswagen Jetta 2.0L TDI Highline AT - Rs 17,86,400

Trendline is the base variant and Comfortline is the middle and the top of the line is the Highline which comes in both DSG and manual

Verdict
The car is a good package of performance, style and luxury apart from the latest drive technologies that gives the Jetta an altogether a new standard. But the uncontrolled inflation and launching of hi-fi cars day in and day out might leave very few buyers for the Jetta. Of course the maintenance cost for a car as expensive as Jetta is another factor that the car might just lose out on prospects. Still it's worth the buy for those who want to be identified as elite of the town, because this qualifies itself and its owner to be elite of the town.
