New Tata Sumo Gold - Can it entice Mahindra XUV500 lovers?

Tata Motors launched the new SUV Tata Sumo Gold, which is supposed to be the product of extensive customer research & field tests is specifically conceptualized and designed considering the needs of younger generation. The Sumo Gold, which is the most powerful SUV in this segment, is expected to rule the market with its power and dependability. The revamped look seems richer and appeals to all those who wish to own a posh vehicle. The base variant of the Tata Sumo Gold comes at Rs. 523,000 and the high end variant costs Rs. 686,000.

How does it look?

The massive exterior perfectly matched with stylish body graphics offer a visual treat and the interiors as well exude similar masculinity. The company's top priority of appealing to the youngsters with good looks is almost achieved with the new Sumo Gold; the well-designed headlights and the tail lamps, the rear and front fog lights are very powerful and in fact complement well with the overall look of the SUV. The renewed grille, broad and empty rear side and the spare wheel is fixed under the cabin, which adds to the dominant presence of the Sumo Gold.

Mr. R. Ramakrishnan, VP (Commercial) Tata Motors, on the occasion of launch was quoted saying, "The Tata Sumo Gold is a result of extensive consumer studies and field tests. The product has been designed to fulfil various requirements, long-awaited by the new generation customer."

The interiors of Tata Sumo Gold will seldom disappoint the owner; the leather-laden steering is powered by hydraulic assistance, which offers complete power to the driver and the spacious, plush interiors add a touch of class.

Engine details

The Tata Sumo Gold comes in two engine options; CR4 Turbo motor that is compliant with BS4 emission norms, delivers a maximum power of 85 PS at 3000 rpm and a peak torque of 250 Nm at 1000-2000rpm. There is also Di Turbo BS3 diesel engine option that gives a power output of 70PS at 3000 rpm and torque of 225Nm at 1600-2000 rpm and compliant to the BS3 norms. The CR4 Turbo engine Sumo Gold gives a mileage of around 14.7kmpl and the Di Turbo gives 14.3 kmpl, which will surely bring a huge smile on the customer's face. The owner of the new Tata Sumo will be totally satiated with the amazing power, acceleration, pick-up and torque; that said it's the same good old SUV from the Tata stable to tame toughest of the terrains with so much ease and should be a tough contender standing alongside competition from Mahindra, Bolero and Scorpio.

All said, will just the daring bold gold, stylish looks, dandy graphics, same old power output and same mouth-watering price tag can the new Tata Sumo gold become a hit amongst SUV-crazy youth? They sure missed to learn a lesson from the Mahindra and it would be greedy to expect the SUV to penetrate with no upgrades and improvisation of styling. Feels Tatas have but missed an opportunity to raise the vehicle to another level.
