Hi,
I am planning to buy a Hatchback which costs between 5 lakhs and 7 lakhs. I drive in city for about 20 KMs per day. I also drive long distance [about 1000 KMs] on an average of 10 times per year. Which car would I go for - Petrol or Diesel? I am looking for the car to be feature-packed. Should be good look-wise, easier maintenance-wise, better mileage-wise...

Since you are daily user, Diesel might be a good option. We have many cars in this price range. For that we have to classify the cars according to different features.
Easier maintenance: Maruti Ritz, Swift and Toyota Etios.
Look-wise: Volkswagen Polo, Ford Figo, Maruti Baleno, Hyundai Elite i20, Honda Jazz.
Driver's Car: Polo, Punto and Jazz( performance oriented, studded with premium)
So, consider the above facts and choose one according to your taste.
