Maruti Suzuki Celerio Goes Diesel

Claimed to be India's most fuel efficient car

The current leader of the Indian Car Manufacturers and also the undisputed favourite of the Indian customer, Maruti Suzuki India has launched the diesel version of the acclaimed Celerio.

The new Celerio comes in the wake of success that its petrol sibling had enjoyed earlier and also with Maruti adding the AMT variant to the list, the sales graph shot up. The diesel engine that powers the Celerio has been designed and tested solely by Suzuki Motor Corp India and the highlight of this engine is that it comes fully equipped with an intercooler and turbocharger but weighs just 89kg. Mileage offered by the engine is also at a high note which Suzuki claims can generate up to 27.63kmpl. This is a figure that beats the Swift Dzire Diesel which has a ARAI certified mileage of 26.59kmpl. It is a 793cc, 2 cylinder diesel engine that produces 47bhp of power and 125Nm of Torque @ 2000 RPM and the engine is claimed to produce much higher torque per CC than the Fiat 1.3 MultiJet. The engine is mostly composed of Aluminium that offers greater weight reduction and thereby increasing performance and efficiency. A Rs 900 crore investment from Maruti culminated in the production of the state-of-the-art engine and could be something that should attract a growth in sales.

With a lot of features being added to the Celerio, safety still takes a back seat in the Indian Car segment. ABS does not come standard across all the variants and driver and co-driver airbags comes only on the top end version the Zdi. However, the Celerio Diesel will stand out as the most affordable diesel car built in India and might as well give Maruti a significant lead from the rest of the competition.
